Kempo Do
As with all martial arts training begins with practise sessions in the Dojos and the focus is on kihon, basics, such as kicking, punching and blocking. The Students must learn coordination and timing to perfect the techniques and through repetition and examination the student progresses through the grades to ultimately achieve 1st Dan Black belt. Training in Kempo Do is balanced by development of character and building of knowledge along with competence of technique. The student is encouraged at the outset to work with their companions and through combination techniques they can practise to perfect blocking, striking and kicking.
This early development of working in pairs is particularly important in Kempo Do, as the students develop their skills they also build respect for their fellow practitioners. As the student develops and progresses through the grades, they are introduced to Embu, these are dual forms, which raises the level from basic defense to more complex technical delivery.
The techniques applied in these dual forms are restricted to the level of exam that the student is studying. The objective is to build on the students knowledge and to assess their ability by increasing the difficulty of techniques for each Grade.
The study of Kempo Do is a forerunner to becoming a student of Bushido Ryu and the students are referred to as Undergraduates. This approach is to align the study to the national curriculum for University students which is one of the key objectives of Bushido Ryu. When students achieve Shodan Kempo Do they are then eligible to study Bushido Ryu.
